The rack price of diamonds has been traditionally set by the South African conglomerate, De Beers. Any precious mineral needs a pricing yardstick, and in much of the diamond industry De Beers provides this. However, what makes diamonds such an exciting investment proposition is that beyond a 3 carat cut and polished value, a diamond can be priced purely subjectively. In other words there is no limit to the price a cut and polished stone can fetch beyond 3 carats. Check out

Much maligned by the civil war of the late 90's and being tarnished as a state dealing in "conflict diamonds", Sierra Leone has enjoyed peace since the end of the bloody civil war. The state is a fully fledged member of the The Kimberley Process. The Kimberley Process is a United Nations backed initiative that requires each diamond producing state to verify and ratify every diamond export as "conflict free", through a rigorous export based certification process. In simple terms, it was alleged and later proven that diamonds were used as currency to barter purchase of arms during the civil war.
